SPECS APPEAL Ref apologises after booking Ramos over celebration for glasses-wearing nephew
Sept. 06, 2019
A REFEREE has apologised to Sergio Ramos after booking the Spain star for a celebration done in tribute to his nephew.
Real Madrid centre-back Ramos opened the scoring for Spain in a narrow 2-1 Euro 2020 qualifier win over Romania.
And he celebrated the strike by mimicking the use of glasses by placing his curled-up fists over his eyes.
The match official took this to be a slight aimed at the crowd.
And he proceeded to show Ramos a yellow card, placing Spain in a precarious situation.
However, the defender has since revealed he did the celebration as a tribute for his nephew, who wears glasses.
And Ramos later added that the referee, after discovering the celebration was completely innocent, issued a heartfelt apology at the final whistle.
He said: “The yellow card came from some confusion.
“It was for my nephew. We both wear glasses and it was for him.
“I did it to cheer him up, to dedicate the goal to him.

“The referee thought I was gesturing to the stands.
“The result was fair, but we shouldn’t have reached the final moments in the state that we did.
“After going 2-0 up, maybe our intensity dropped out.”
