Kenya qualify for 2020 Olympics & Africa 7s finals
Oct. 13, 2019
Kenya Lionesses have Qualified for 2020 Tokyo Olympics thanks to a 21-0 win over Tunisia which will also see them play in the Africa Women 7s finals against South Africa as they seek to defend the title they won last year.
Other finalists South Africa are not in the race for a ticket to the Olympic since South African Sports Confederation and Olympics Committee (SASCOC) bars them to qualify for the Olympic Games directly from African Regional Qualifier tournament. They will not also be part of the repechage.
Kenya Lionesses managed to break the deadlock few minutes of search in the first half with Cynthia Camilla racing on to score. Tunisia would immediately launch the hunt for an equalizer but Lionesses defence proved to be hard to crack for them. The Lionesses would hold on to take a slim lead to the break.
In the closing half, Celestine Masinde slid past Tunisia defence to touch down the second try for Kenya Lionesses. Janet Okello would force her way to the try-line after a penalty in Tunisia territory to seal the victory. The Lionesses would win the clash and book a ticket to the second straight Olympics.
South Africa have booked a ticket to finals after beating Madagascar 29-0 to reach the finals. They bagged a five-pointer before Rights Mkhari added their second try of the game for a 12-0 lead at halftime.
Liske Lategan scored their first second-half try before Mkari returned to the scoresheet to send them 24 points ahead. Lategan also got back on the scoresheet to send the Imbokodo to the finals.
