The Toon head coach may be forced into a change against Manchester City at St James' Park
Steve Bruce has been a dealt a fresh blow ahead of the clash with Manchester City with DeAndre Yedlin rated doubtful this weekend.
The right-back - who performed poorly at Aston Villa and gave away a needless free-kick which led to the opening goal - had returned to the side after a summer operation.
But Bruce must now have to weigh up bringing in either Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth against the moneybags Manchester outfit.
Bruce said: "We have a problem with Yedlin with his hip."
But Bruce will welcome back Sean Longstaff from suspension which gives him another option in midfield.
He said: "He's had to wait a long time.
"It's good to see him back."
Bruce also took the opportunity to reflect on news that Matt Ritchie's injury will now rule him out until 2020.
Bruce, speaking at his pre-match Press conference for the Manchester City game, said: "We're all disappointed, there's nothing worse for the player.
"When you have had an operation like he has had and then the surgeon decides he needs to do a bit more.
"We hope he is back in early January.
"They say it is not too horrific.
"There was a tiny fragment on bone came away after the impact.
"We hope it does the trick.
"The frustrating thing for Matty is he was so close and even joined in but then felt something in his ankle and couldn't shake it off.
"I said at the time it was a bad challenge.
"But it's worse when the player is out in January.
"Let's hope he makes a speedy recovery.
"He has never had an injury like this before."
