President Uhuru Fulfills Babu Owino's Special Covid-19 Request

May. 21, 2020

President Uhuru Kenyatta has finally fulfilled Embakasi East MP Babu Owino's request several weeks after he wrote to him.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke , the lawmaker disclosed that he had written to the head of state, requesting for testing kits to his constituency as Covid-19 pandemic continues to ravage the region.
He further noted that Uhuru accepted his request and they pinpointed two centres, Utawala and Lower Savanna (Soweto), that the exercise would be carried out in the constituency.
The exercise is expected to kick off in the week beginning Monday, May 25.
"I had written a letter to the president and he approved my request. It is a random testing exercise for Embakasi East Constituency residents and they have approved Utawala and Soweto.
"It is expected to kick off next week. We are still ironing out the nitty-gritties. The constituency has a population of 700,000 people," stated Owino.
He also thanked the president for the approval, noting that it would help curb the spread of Coronavirus in line with the state's goal of flattening the Covid-19 curve.
"A few weeks ago I made a request to the president and the Covid-19 taskforce to do mass testing in our Constituency. I want to thank the president for granting this request," he added.
Currently, mass testing is ongoing in various estates in Nairobi and Mombasa including Kawangware and Eastleigh in Nairobi as well as Old Town in Mombasa.
During his address on Wednesday, May 20, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe disclosed that the consistent targeted testing had helped curb the spread of the disease in Kawangware.
The tests had also increased the number of cases reported every 24 hours, better placing the country in a position to make informed decisions on preventive measures leading to state condoning off Eastleigh and Old Town estates.
As of May 20. the number of infections in the country had hit 1,029.
