Jun. 28, 2020
Charles Njagua Kanyi is speaking out after traders and residents of Gikomba woke up to a rude shock after their structures were brought down during Friday night demolitions. Reports on 28th of June show that the MP is blaming the government not just for the demolitions but the recent Gikomba fire as well.
"In a series of tweets shared by Starehe MP Charles Njagua Kanyi, the MP blamed the government claiming they had a hand in the recent inferno at Kenya’s largest open-air, According to the MP, the traders arrived at the market on Saturday morning only to find their stalls had been demolished", Nairobi News.
In a series of tweets, the legislator revealed those who were actively involved in the demolitions at Gikomba market but his claims remain unverified, “NYS recruits are in Gikomba right now. They are demolishing stalls that traders had reconstructed after a mysterious fire razed them on Thursday morning. GSU officers are also there protecting the recruits. Is this exercise a sign that the govt was involved in the recent fire?” he wrote.
“I ask for an immediate halt to this exercise. NYS recruits should go home. Any security officer present in Gikomba should be there to guard the reconstructed stalls and other properties owned by traders. The govt exists to protect property. It should not oversee its destruction,” he continued.
After the recent fire at the market, the government blamed city developers whom it said caused the fire as they are eyeing the and in the market. So while the government blames the private developers int he city, the legislator is blaming the government.
