Defending champions Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-1 to extend their unbeaten run at Anfield and, maintain their perfect start to the season.
In a dominant display, Liverpool expressed their intent earlier on as Andrew Robertson wasted a good opportunity to score and, minutes later Virgil Van Dijk had his goal bound effort cleared by Arsenal’s Rob Holding.
In the 23 rd minute Trent Alexander- Arnold came close to opening the scores as he unleashed a rasping shot that clipped the edge of the crossbar.
Arsenal had no answer to Liverpool high pressing, as they forced them into errors and starved them off the ball.
Their lucky break came when Granit Xhaka’s pass managed to slice Liverpool open and, set them on their first attack, which Alexander Lacazette converted to give the visitors a surprise lead.
The lead lasted barely two minutes as Sadio Mane poked in a rebound to level and give the home team the momentum to search for the second goal.
Andy Robertson turned from villain to hero as he controlled nicely a square ball from his fellow fullback and dinked it past the advancing Bernd Leno to make it 2. Arsenal were lucky to go to the break a goal down.
Liverpool picked it up from where they had left and had the chances to score but were poor in their finishing.
Arsenal’s coach Mikel Arteta introduced Dani Ceballos midway the second half and he turned the game around. The Spaniard set up Alexander Lacazette on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper but he failed to score.
It was however the other substitute, Diego Jota who scored on the 88 th minute, to win it for Liverpool and kill the resistance that Arsenal had mounted.
“I am completely happy with the performance, we mixed it up, played long, played short and the boys delivered.” Said Jürgen Klopp
