Tension in Jubilee as Uhuru convenes urgent meeting MPs, Tanga Tanga lawmakers not invited
Oct. 29, 2020
A storm is brewing in Jubilee party after lawmakers allied to Deputy President William Ruto were left out of a planned meeting that will be addressed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
DP Ruto’s defacto spokesman revealed that the meeting has left out Tanga Tanga lawmakers, questioning why they have been left out of the important discussions.
Reports indicate that the head of state has organized a retreat to Naivasha with his Kieleweke Members of Parliament to chart the way forward for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report including the referendum.
Tanga Tanga MPs led by Caleb Kositany have criticized the move, alleging that they have been sidelined.
“What bridges are they building when they are convening a meeting over the report in Naivasha in isolation?
What is making them to isolate some of us from the Constitution amendment process?” Kositany asked.
The decision by the President to sideline Tanga Tanga Members of Parliament from the planned retreat has been viewed to have been contributed by their constant criticisms and plans to oppose the document.
This comes after Deputy President William Ruto had expressed his reservations on the various parts of the BBI report and called for further review of the report before heading for a referendum.
The second in command was specifically concerned on the creation of the office of the Ombudsman, who will be appointed by the President under the new proposals which he had claimed that will undermine the independence of the constitution.
DP William Ruto had alleged that this will take the Kenyan judiciary to the dark days when the decision of the judiciary could be affected by even a phone call.
He further disagreed with the new proposal to create new positions of the Prime Minister and its two deputies, claiming that it will not solve the problem of winner takes it all.
President Uhuru and his BBI partner Raila Odinga had called on all Kenyans to read and understand the document. They also warned political leaders from deceiving Kenyans over the contents of the BBI report.
