Justice GBM Kariuki is a household name in Kenya for his brave fight years ago when he disclosed that he was in a relationship with former Justice and constitutional affairs Minister Martha Karua.
Kariuki came into the limelight back in 2008 when he was arrested after he was accused of a very serious crime but he would later attribute his arresting to his decision to end the relationship with the once-powerful cabinet minister.
Kariuki, then a judge of the High Court and presiding judge of the Family Division was arrested on October 20, 2008, and charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.
Investigating officers told the court they were under pressure from the Attorney General and the Justice minister (Martha Karua) to arrest the judge and keep him in cells although investigations were incomplete and there was no evidence to support a murder charge.
Following his acquittal for lack of evidence on October 15, 2009, Justice Kariuki sued the State for damages arising from malicious prosecution and was awarded Ksh5 million by Justice George Odunga on January 14, 2016.
However, the now Narc Kenya party leader has never disclosed what really transpired between the two and has never recognised whether the two of them were indeed in a serious relationship.
Martha Karua has been a single mother and when asked if she is married, she said she is not married, but that has never prevented her from carrying out her duties, and will not prevent her from running the country if she’s elected president by then.
