Secret Meetings Between Turkey And Israel, Correction Of Relations Looms
Dec 1, 2020
As part of efforts launched by Turkey to mend ties, the Turkish intelligence service has held secret talks with Israeli officials, with meetings in recent weeks with Hakan Fidan, the intelligence chief who has represented Turkey in at least one of them.
A source revealed to Al - Monitor that delegations and negotiations between Turkey and Israel are still continuing, but he did not elaborate.
New stage and re - ambassadors
The sources believe that Fidan had held several similar meetings in the past, to discuss common security concerns in many files, including Syria and Libya, but the information confirmed that the last round was aimed specifically at raising the level of relations to a new stage and returning ambassadors.
For her part, Galia Lindenstrauss, a researcher at the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies, considered that there is an opportunity to turn the page on the differences between the two countries.
And I thought that it would be in the interest of both countries not to exaggerate the meaning of the step of returning ambassadors, given that relations were not reduced in 2018, as from the diplomatic protocol point of view it is a simple step, as she put it.
Significant deterioration
Relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv had deteriorated sharply in recent years, following the killing of 10 Turkish civilians by members of an Israeli commando force in 2010, when the latter raided a Turkish humanitarian relief fleet heading to the Gaza Strip.
