During a political meeting of the ruling CPDM party in Yaoundé 7, Cameroon’s Minister of Basic Education, Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, launched a surprising attack on opposition leader Maurice Kamto. Instead of focusing on his duties, the minister challenged Kamto to a public debate—mocking him over a local road issue near his home. Critics say the attack was misplaced, especially as Kamto is a presidential candidate, not a local councilor. Meanwhile, the country’s basic education system, which is the minister’s real responsibility, is in crisis. Many children in Cameroon still study in broken classrooms, on the ground, or even outdoors. In some villages, schools don’t exist at all. Teachers are few, poorly paid, and overwhelmed. As a result, school attendance is dropping, and illiteracy is rising. Frustrated by poor working conditions, many teachers dream of leaving the country. Yet, instead of addressing these urgent problems, Minister Etoundi Ngoa seems more focused on defending President Biya—now 92 and in power for 43 years—and attacking Kamto, even though 82 candidates have submitted files for the upcoming presidential election.
