- Democratic Alliance MP Phumzile Van Damme has clapped back at the negativity surrounding the party
- Van Damme denied any 'race war' is taking place within the opposition party's ranks
- This comes as allegations abound that attempts to remove Mmusi Maimane were racially motivated
Phumzile Van Damme has come out in defence of the Democratic Alliance following speculation.
Briefly.co.za reported that Mmusi Maimane had alluded to racial motives while facing pressure to resign from his place at the helm of the party.
A Sunday Times report had claimed former party leader Tony Leon, joined by other senior party members, had met in an attempt to coerce Maimane into giving up his role as opposition head.
In response to this, Van Damme commented on the situation, adamant that no 'race war' was taking place in the DA:
Helen Zille has also denied any motives of this kind, adamant that she had contributed more towards encouraging diversity than anyone else.
Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has also jumped on the bandwagon, commenting that the party would not be part of those who long for segregation:
