'The Little Mermaid Live!' Is Coming To TV and We Don't Hate It?
Oct. 08, 2019
A live special based on the classic Disney film is happening with some unexpected stars.
It’s not a production on the scale of live-action Aladdin and The Lion King remakes, but a TV special on The Little Mermaid is still a big deal to fans of the beloved original.
We’ve just seen the first teaser trailer for the special, and it looks…kind of promising! It’s basically an introduction to the cast, a mixture of well-known actors, newcomers, and those better known for their music than their onscreen appearances.
Auli’i Cravalho, the Hawaiian actress who played Moana in Moana and Ralph Breaks the Internet is taking on the role of Ariel, complete with her signature red hair.
Queen Latifah—who we should remind you has been nominated for an acting Oscar—plays Ursula. She’s cool in everything she does, so her inclusion here will definitely bump up this production, particularly because she should get to use her considerable musical talents.
Speaking of musical talents, Shaggy is playing Sebastian, which is just delightful. His only other acting credit is Blast , a 2004 action comedy starring Eddie Griffin, Breckin Meyer, and Vivica A. Fox, a movie that doesn’t sound real but somehow is.
John Stamos plays Chef Louis, the guy who is perpetually trying to cook Sebastian. The live-action version wisely kept his trademark moustache, making Stamos a tres French stereotype, which we are more than OK with.
Graham Phillips plays Prince Eric, the human love interest who’s saved by and falls in love with Ariel. He’s been a working actor since he was nine, he dated Ariana Grande for three years.
The trailer closes with the famous shot of Ariel, silhouetted by the moon, bursting out of the water and flinging her wet hair backwards, a move reminiscent of Timon, Pumba, and Simba walking in front of the sun in the original The Lion King making its way into the trailer for the remake .
Of course, this special is something of an appetizer for a live-action, feature-length remake of the movie . So even if your kids don’t love this special, there’s plenty of Mermaid content in the pipeline for them to enjoy.
