But since this is Survivor, we also know to expect the unexpected, and Survivor 40 will also feature a number of new rules and aspects to the game. To make sure that you're up to date before the season premieres on Wednesday, we put together this handy guide to the new rules for Survivor 40, the all-winners season.
Survivor 40 brought back the Edge of Extinction.
While fans absolutely hated the Edge of Extinction twist in season 38, the show made the decision to try it again for the all-winners season. However, the choice was made in part to ensure that the winners would want to come back to the show.
"The number one reason is that I did feel that when we called winners, that if they thought it was one and out 'Im voted out and Im done'their chances of saying yes were not as high as if it would be if I said 'No matter what, you will have another shot at the prize,'" Probst explained to Entertainment Weekly . And so Edge of Extinction is really saying, in a season in which you are lucky enough to get these winners to come back and play again, give em a chance to play."
Survivor 40 will feature a form of Survivor money.
In a first for the show, Survivor's all-winners seasons will include something called Fire Tokens. These tokens will allow the castaways to buy comfort items, food, or game advantagesthink of it as a supersized version of the Survivor auction.
Probst also explained the rules of the fire tokens to Entertainment Weekly : "Think of tokens as money. And the way it works is, everyone starts with one. And when you are voted out you have to will it to somebody still in the game as you head to the Edge of Extinction."
As the castaways still in the game earn more Fire Tokens from those who are voted out, the castaways on the Edge of Extinction will have the opportunity to find hidden advantages on the island that they can then sell to the active players. As the Survivor fandom page explains, "while the advantages found on the Edge of Extinction have no use for the Edge's inhabitants, the Fire Tokens earned from selling these can be used to purchase their own advantages for the upcoming re-entry challenge for a better chance to get back in the game."
The castaways will be told about the Edge of Extinction advantages, but they'll only have until sundown to purchase them. And in another twist that is sure to cause drama, the castaways have the ability to pool their Fire Tokens.
Survivor 40 will include increased prize money.
Let's be real herewhile Survivor is a great experience, most of the winners would have probably been okay with never again living on remote island for 39 days while starving and scheming. In order to entice the winners back to the show (and to up the ante for viewers), the grand prize was upped from $1 million to $2 million.
