The Gombe State Government has warned against reopening of schools in the state from June 8.
Dr Habu Dahiru, the state Commissioner for Education, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Thursday said that the ministry of education was yet to receive any circular from relevant agencies on resumption date for schools in the country.
According to him, no responsible government will open schools in a hurry for students to return amid new cases of Coronavirus in the country.
“No responsible government will allow students to be exposed to this pandemic and we expect parents and all stakeholders in the sector to understand and be patient on reopening.
“We did not close the schools on our own. There were directives received based on the technical guidelines given by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
“If we are going to reopen schools, we will need the same directive and this will only be when it is safe to open schools again,’’ he said.
The commissioner added that there are no plans in the state to re-open schools until Coronavirus has been placed under control.
He added that when such a directive is given, schools must be fumigated and teachers and students properly sensitized before activities commence.
Dahiru further warned private schools to adhere strictly to the directive, warning that “schools attempting to operate without getting the ministry’s nod would be closed and their licenses revoked”.
According to him, the ministry has a monitoring team conducting routine checks and anywhere they see public gathering in any school, we will take action on them.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has said the federal government’s model for schools reopening will ensure that all students don’t return to school at the same time.
Nwajiuba said: “The plan to reopen schools entails adopting a two-shift system and allowing those who will write exams to return earlier than others.
