JUST IN: Ekiti Govt issues statement on gang-rape of 17-year-old hawker

The Ekiti State Government has issued a statement on the gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl by three armed men in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
It was gathered that the victim was hawking sachet waters and soft drinks around 7pm on Monday when she was attacked at the popular Oja’ba market in Ado-Ekiti metropolis.
This newspaper learned that the armed men took her to a secluded area, and took turns to rape her for about 45 minutes. After the incident, she was later taken to a hospital for medical treatment after which the incident was reported to the Ekiti Police Command and Office of the Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Erelu Fayemi.
Reacting to the sad incident on Wednesday evening in a series of tweets via its Twitter handle, the state government condemned the sad incident.
It revealed that the state Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the gang-rape of the 17-year-old girl.
Quoting the state Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, it said that the Command has commenced an investigation into the matter, assuring that the case would be thoroughly prosecuted and ensure justice prevails.
The state government lamented the increasing incidences of sexual against women, adding that the government was ready to its best to prevent the state from being tagged a thriving land for violence against girl-child.
