Wolves keep Champions League dream alive with easy victory over Everton – despite Adama Traore’s miss of the season contender
Jul 13, 2020
Adama Traore’s miss of the season contender didn’t stop Wolves from cruising past Everton with a 3-0 victory on Sunday.
Wanderers kept their slim hopes of Champions League football alive thanks to goals from Raul Jimenez, Leander Dendoncker and Diogo Jota.
However, Traore will not want to watch the highlights, having missed an open goal from six-yards out in the dying moments of the match.
Nonetheless, Nuno Espirito Santo will eagerly awaiting the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s announcement tomorrow – which should reveal whether Man City will be banned from European football next season.
It could confirm that fifth place is enough for Champions League qualification, and by ending a run of two consecutive defeats, Wolves go to within three points of fifth-place Manchester United.
Everton, on the other hand, looked like a team who have nothing at all to play for – and the defeat leaves them eleventh.
After a slow start to the match, Wolves slowly took control and went in to the break ahead by scoring in first-half injury time.
Daniel Podence tricked his way into the area and was brought down by Lucas Digne, before Jimenez stepped up to convert the penalty.
Wolves doubled their lead 46 seconds into the second half when Leander Dendoncker glanced in Pedro Neto’s delivery.
And then Jota made it 3-0 with the pick of the bunch, latching onto a brilliant Ruben Neves pass and rifling a fierce volley past Pickford.
