Invercargill's oldest operating church set for upgrade through Provincial Growth Fund
Sep 30, 2020
Invercargill’s oldest operating church is set for a makeover with an allocation from the Provincial Growth Fund.
Cook Island Christian Church received $206,744 from the fund, which will be spent upgrading its community centre at the former site of Elston Lea Primary School and a makeover for its church in Clifton.
Funding at the church site will include painting the building and restoration of the bell.
It is expected that 15 local contractors will be employed.
Built in 1887, it is the oldest operating wooden church in Invercargill.
It was acquired by the Cook Island Christian Church in 1993.
Cook Island Christian Church secretary Terangi Teariki said the church started in 1991 in Bluff, when a lot of people were living in the area.
A lot of people were spending half the year in Bluff and the other half in the Cook Islands, and wanted their own church, Teariki said.
Previously the ministers of the pacific churches were provided by the Samoan community, which created complications for Cook Islanders way of life, he said.
After using a few building in Bluff, they moved to the Clifton site in 1993.
Through the Historical Places Trust, now known as Heritage New Zealand, architect Mick Hesselin had been involved with renovating the building in 1998, but later became concerned about its maintenance.
